What is Community Access TV?
Channel 17 airs programs made by community members at our facility and brought to us by local individuals and organizations. We don’t censor or pre-screen programs. Content is the responsibility of the person producing each show. Channel 17 is a true public forum. The First Amendment thrives here! Our staff will work with you to get your ideas organized and developed. We want you to succeed in producing a show to air on Santa Barbara’s Channel 17 that represent all the interesting expressions of diversity and cultural resources in our community.
How can you get involved?
There are a lot of ways you can get involved in community access television:
- Become a member of The Santa Barbara Channels ($50 annual fee)
- Take workshops to get trained on our equipment
- Once certified, help someone on a new or existing program, a great way to learn before doing your own program
- Submit a program proposal which our staff will review and approve or modif
- Once certified, call (805) 571-1721 to reserve a Field Package or Studio
- Produce a noncommercial, non-obscene program
- Edit, if needed, and burn to DVD
- Submit your DVD with a Request for Program Playback
Can I bring a completed program to play on TV?
Yes. Programs don’t have to be made here to air here. If you’ve got access to a camera and/or editing facilities, you can also bring us a completed program. We love receiving programs about Santa Barbara topics that are already finished!
Local schools, museums, institutions, and nonprofit organizations can bring us completed programs, or can join as members and produce their own programs. We can also produce programs for a reasonable fee.
What is required to submit a program that was produced somewhere else?
All you have to do is:
- Be a resident of the South Coast (Carpinteria through Gaviota)
- Become a member of The Santa Barbara Channels
- Sign our Request for Program Playback Agreement
